Ben is a registered patent attorney in the physics/engineering team. He specialises in the drafting and prosecution of patent applications in the IT and computer software areas across a range of information communication technologies including blockchain, artificial intelligence, fintech, internet of things and software applications. Ben has also had some experience outside of the pure information technology space, including medical devices such as breathing apparatuses and sleep monitoring devices. He is particularly adept at identifying patentable subject matter and developing it into valuable intellectual property assets.
Ben’s current practice includes undertaking patent searches and prosecuting Australian and international patent applications. Before joining the firm, he gained extensive experience working at an Australian intellectual property firm where his practice involved contentious and non-contentious matters for both Australian and overseas clients. He also completed a secondment at Data61, Australia’s leading data innovation group.
Ben has had significant experience in providing specialist assistance in large scale patent litigation and is skilled in advising on complex validity and infringement matters.
Prior to becoming a patent attorney, Ben worked as a software engineer in the telecommunications, energy and industrial automation sectors, where his experience involved implementing and maintaining complex computer software. He also has experience working at large top tier law firms and the Australian Legal Information Institute (AustLII). This experience means Ben brings a broad and highly commercial perspective on IP protection to help his clients realise their business objectives.
Ben graduated from the University of New South Wales with a Bachelor of Engineering (Software Engineering), graduating with first class honours. Ben then completed a Bachelor of Laws also from the University of New South Wales, and then a Master of Laws from the University of Technology in Sydney. He is also admitted as a solicitor to the Supreme Court of New South Wales.
