Joe is a registered patent attorney in Australia and has a professional focus on physics and engineering related technologies. He has particular expertise in photonics, renewable energy, electromagnetic machines, telecommunication, mobile communication, and digital signal processing.

Joe is a former committee member of the NSW IEEE Section, as well as the vice-chair (formerly chair) of the Joint Chapter of Photonics, Circuits and Systems, Solid-State Circuits & Electron Devices.

Joe holds several academic qualifications. His undergraduate studies comprised a balanced mix of cross-discipline subjects in electronics engineering, computing and laser physics.

Building on this solid foundation, Joe received his PhD specialising in fibre-optic physics from the University of Sydney. During his studies, Joe co-published quality scientific articles in high-impact journals. One of his publications is cited well over 200 times by researchers globally, and is selected by Nature Physics in 2015 as one of the papers in the past decade that "significantly advanced the field of slow-light research".
