FPA Patent Attorneys is delighted to announce that Catherine Winbanks is now a registered Australian and New Zealand Patent Attorney. We congratulate Catherine on her registration.
Before joining FPA Patent Attorneys in 2014, Catherine completed a Bachelor of Science (Human Biology) degree and a PhD (Medical Science) which involved understanding mechanisms of tubulointerstitial kidney fibrosis. She then pursued post-doctoral studies at the University of Melbourne and then at the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute. During this period she characterised the roles of Wnt and TGF-beta signalling in the development of colorectal cancer, and was involved in developing novel therapeutic interventions using gene therapy, miRNA and siRNA to treat skeletal muscle wasting and heart disease.
During her career as a scientist, Catherine has published more than 20 peer reviewed articles and reviews in journals including Science Translational Medicine, The Journal of Cell Biology, Proceedings of the National Academy of Science of the United States of America (PNAS) and The Journal of Biological Chemistry. Catherine decided to pursue a career as a Patent Attorney so that she could work with clients who are developing cutting edge technologies related to the biotechnology sector and medical sciences. She is involved in the prosecution of Australian and foreign patent applications, drafting of patent applications, providing patentability and freedom to operate advice, and has assisted in opposition proceedings.
